What's new
2.4.1 · 2026-10-03
- The website is cull.photography, and support is support@cull.photography. The app, the key emails and the site all point there now.
2.4.0 · 2026-10-02
- What's new shows the newest release on its own, in a card, with earlier versions folded away below it. Open any of them with a click or the keyboard.
- A problem report can carry up to three screenshots: Add screenshot, or paste one. They are PNG or JPEG, 4 MB each, and go only with a problem, never with an idea or a question. A screenshot of CULL shows your photographs, so the tab says so before you add one. Reports saved as a file keep the screenshots beside it.
2.3.2 · 2026-10-02
- A copy moved to a new computer (a profile restore, Migration Assistant) takes its seat again on the first check instead of staying paused.
- Check now says so when the license service still cannot be reached, instead of quietly staying paused. A paused copy says Paused, and no longer shows an empty key field.
- Removing another computer from the license asks the same way everything else in Settings does: Remove?, Cancel, and twenty seconds to change your mind.
- The Free cap on the staged screen names why a key was withdrawn or removed, and offers Get CULL Pro next to Add license.
- About has a Support row with the address. The license messages point there, and say the key comes from your email.
- Installing an update waits for ratings still on their way to disk, as closing the app does.
- A half-written Feedback report survives a look at another Settings tab, and a crash report offered at launch is offered once.
- Settings → License: the plan pill takes the focus when the plan changes, and the seats-full list is announced.
- The license terms describe the Pro license (two computers, the online check, subscriptions, lifetime, refunds), and the privacy policy names the processors and how long license data is kept. Both are version 2.
2.3.1 · 2026-10-02
- A license that is revoked, ended or no longer valid, a license whose two seats are both in use elsewhere, or a computer removed from its license, now goes straight back to Free: the key is forgotten, and Settings → License is the plain Free screen with one line above it saying what happened. The line stays until Pro is back, or a day after you have seen it. Entering a key is the way back; for a refused key, the Check now and Use this computer again buttons are gone.
- The Pro card on the home screen sits in the bottom-right corner, a step larger.
2.3.0 · 2026-10-02
- Settings, reorganised. Every tab is two or three labelled groups with a hairline between them, the controls line up in one column, and on the tabs that have one, the row you reach for least, reset or remove, sits last in the same place.
- About shows the version, the update check and the plan as rows; the links sit at the foot.
- Settings → License: on Pro the computers group is headed "Computers · 1 of 2" and a free seat is drawn; on Free the key field has its own group and an error appears on a reserved line, so nothing jumps.
- A Free copy with no key sees what Pro is, in one line, on the home screen and at the foot of the License tab. The prices will be on the website.
- The Settings hint sits beside Open folders on the home screen.
2.2.1 · 2026-10-02
- A revoked key, a freed seat or an ended license now reaches the app at the next launch, and when Settings → License is opened, not up to twelve hours later.
- A computer removed from the license (from another computer or by support) goes back to Free at once and offers "Use this computer again"; CULL no longer takes a seat back on its own.
- Settings → License: the key field formats as you type and Add license waits for a whole key; the key and computers rows run the full width; the seats line says when a seat is free; an ended license says the day it ended.
- Dragging or double-clicking the home screen no longer moves or un-maximises the window; only the title bar does.
- The privacy policy says what the author can see about a license.
2.2.0 · 2026-10-02
- A license key now works on two computers, and CULL knows which ones. Settings → License lists the computers using your key, lets you remove one, and offers "Use this computer instead" when both seats are taken.
- Pro is confirmed with the license service in the background, about every twelve hours, so a refunded or withdrawn key stops working without a new version of CULL. A copy that cannot reach the internet keeps Pro for 30 days, then pauses to Free until it can; nothing is locked and no file is touched.
- Keys from CULL 2.0 and 2.1 are retired. If you hold one, write to support for your new key; it is free.
- The key field accepts a key with or without dashes, in any case.
2.1.5 · 2026-10-01
- Feedback has its own tab in Settings, above About. The form follows what you came for: a problem asks what happened and what you expected and includes diagnostics; an idea asks what it is and why it would help; a question needs your email so the answer can reach you. Send is the one button; saving or copying the report is offered only if sending fails.
- Every version in What's new shows its release date.
- The grid shows one scrollbar, the app's own.
- Settings shows the version in its header. The info rail's purple note is one line.
- No stray outline on a window or sheet that was just opened; the ring appears only when you reach something with Tab.
- Recent folders: the count and the time sit centered in the row. The grid's star mark sits a little further from the corner. The AF point bracket is red.
- The keys sheet no longer shows a light seam under the title bar.
2.1.4 · 2026-09-30
- The Windows installer carries CULL's own icon and artwork, and shows a plain progress bar instead of a list of files.
2.1.3 · 2026-09-30
- The privacy policy describes where a sent report goes.
- Report a problem: the app's own checkbox, and the focus ring on a text field is no longer cut off.
- About sits with its buttons and copyright line at the bottom of the pane.
- Settings → General fits without a scrollbar; the diagnostic logging row says what the log holds when it is off.
2.1.2 · 2026-09-30
- Report a problem sends with one click. The report goes straight to CULL's support inbox and you get a ticket number back; saving it as a file or emailing it still works.
2.1.1 · 2026-09-30
- Help has a toggle: F1 opens the keys sheet and keeps it open until F1 or Esc. Holding Tab still shows it for as long as it is held.
- Updating no longer makes the next launch say CULL didn't close properly.
- A dialog opened with the mouse no longer lights up its first button; opened from the keyboard, it still starts on the safe choice.
- Settings → General: the default overlays row wraps instead of forcing a sideways scroll.
- Scrollbars match the app instead of the system's white ones.
- The recent folders list gives keyboard focus room around each row.
- What's new has space above its footer; over the Free limit, the staged screen no longer suggests adding folders. The keys sheet no longer shows a light seam under the title bar.
2.1.0 · 2026-09-30
- Faster on big shoots: a rating no longer stalls for a moment while the smart suggestions catch up, scrubbing stays smooth while thumbnails fill in, and the loupe and compare panes stop repainting for changes behind them.
- Faster on a NAS: moving rejects does one file operation per frame instead of six, opening a shoot of DNGs no longer looks for a sidecar beside every file, filmstrip thumbnails read a tenth of the data, and cache hits copy nothing.
- Smart culling scores frames on several cores when the shoot is on a local drive.
- Rating, starring or labelling a DNG keeps its cached previews, so reopening a culled DNG shoot is instant again.
- A frame with no embedded preview (some DNGs, a CR2 without one) shows as unavailable in the grid instead of retrying forever.
- Capture-time order: a DNG whose XMP another tool had written, or a frame whose date sat right at a read boundary, could lose its capture time and sort by file date. Fixed.
- The Finish button in the status bar no longer reopens the dialog with the previous run's result.
- Copying keeps to an export folder flushes each file to disk before it counts as done, so a power cut cannot leave a truncated copy that later looks finished.
- Settings are saved a moment after the last change instead of on every change, and always before a quit, an export or an update.
- Keyboard: Ctrl R retries changes that didn't save and re-checks an unreachable folder. F6 moves focus between the frame, the status bars and the info rail; there, Enter and Space press a button, the arrows move between buttons, and Esc returns to the frame.
- Screen readers hear saving and failed saves, the folder and memory chips, analyzing progress, Finish results and a copied report. The grid and filmstrips are lists of named frames (verdict, stars, label). Dialogs keep focus inside and start on the safe choice, so Enter on Stay stays.
- With unsaved changes, the leave dialog and the Finish dialog offer Retry saving.
- Two-step confirms say what they do, wait 20 seconds, and cancel on Esc or when focus moves away. Windows says Recycle Bin.
- Wording: frames rather than ratings or images, Filmstrip, Finish the cull, Lightroom rating, key names like Ctrl E and Shift 3, Center guide, and error messages that say what to do next. Counts get thousands separators. Leica is named among the formats.
- Quieter text is brighter, and text fields have a visible border.
- Report a problem: one "Save as file", "Copied." feedback, and a note when no mail program opens.
- The license terms and privacy policy state what the app does today: a key is checked on this computer and nothing is sent. There is no trial, and the terms no longer mention one.
- Saving settings, adding or removing a license, and writing the log no longer run on the window's thread, so a slow drive cannot freeze the window.
2.0.1 · 2026-09-29
- Settings live in a file (settings.json in the app's data folder) and move there on their own from earlier versions. Settings → Storage can export them to a file and import them on another computer.
- About: a "Check for updates" button, and the Third-party licenses page now lists every component in the app, not only the models.
- The Windows installer shows the license terms, installs for the current user, and on uninstall removes the image cache and logs. Sidecars are never touched.
2.0.0 · 2026-09-29
- CULL Free and CULL Pro. Free has every feature and culls up to 250 frames in one session. Pro has no limit. A license key goes in under Settings → License; "Remove license from this computer" takes it out again.
- The limit is decided by the app itself when a cull begins, on the whole staged set, so it holds whatever folders are opened.
1.9.2 · 2026-09-29
- About links to the website, and Report a problem can email support directly: cull.help@outlook.com.
1.9.1 · 2026-09-29
- The first-cull hint floats over the bottom of the photo instead of sitting in the status bar, so it has room at every window size.
- About: "Licenses" is now "Third-party licenses", to tell it from the license terms.
1.9.0 · 2026-09-29
- A welcome on first launch: the promise, the five keys, and your first folder. Hints in the status bar during your first cull, each gone once you have done it.
- What's new opens once after an update, from a line on the home screen. License terms and the privacy policy are in About and are shipped inside the app.
1.8.0 · 2026-09-29
- Report a problem from About: what happened, what you expected, and diagnostics you can read before they leave your computer. With no report server set up yet, the report is saved as a file and shown in your file manager.
- A log file, kept on this computer (Settings → Storage → Open log folder). It never contains file or folder names, or paths: a path is reduced to its file extension before it is written. Diagnostic logging adds detail when you are asked for it.
- If CULL closes unexpectedly, the next start says so and offers to report it.
1.7.2 · 2026-09-28
- Every message in the app reads the same way: what happened, then what to do. Error messages no longer show technical details.
- About shows what's new and the licenses of bundled components.
- Spelling unified to American English (favorite, color).
1.7.1 · 2026-09-28
- Updates download faster and more reliably.
1.7.0 · 2026-09-28
- Olympus and OM System ORF files open, with the AF point and drive mode from the camera. Every Olympus body embeds a 3200 px preview, so zoom shows that preview and says so.
- Panasonic RW2 and Leica RWL files open. Bodies from 2022 on zoom to the full image; earlier ones zoom to their 1920 px preview.
1.6.1 · 2026-09-28
- Faster opening of every frame and a cheaper folder scan.
1.6.0 · 2026-09-28
- A DNG's verdicts are written inside the DNG, where Lightroom reads them, instead of to a sidecar it would ignore.
1.5.0 · 2026-09-27
- Sony ARW, Nikon NEF and Fujifilm RAF files open, with the AF point and drive mode where the camera records them.
- A quiet badge shows when a file has no full-size JPEG inside it and zoom is limited to its largest preview.
1.4.0 · 2026-09-27
- Adobe DNG files open, from any camera or converter.
1.3.0 · 2026-09-26
- A favorite is written as Lightroom's purple label; stars are yours alone, and CULL never removes a label it did not write.
1.2.0 · 2026-09-26
- Canon CR2 files open.
1.1.0 · 2026-09-26
- Composition guides, the AF-point bracket, and a new icon.
1.0.0 · 2026-09-21
- First release: keyboard-fast culling of Canon CR3 files with Lightroom-compatible verdicts, smart-culling suggestions, and automatic updates.
